Whether you are an employee, a manager, or a business owner, you share a common goal you don’t want anyone to get hurt on the job. Here we will look at how the standard will reduce risks and create better working conditions around the world.
Every 15 seconds a worker dies from a work-related accident or disease and 153 people experience a work-related injury. The direct and indirect cost of occupational illness and accidents at work is estimated at USD 2.8 trillion worldwide. These represent an enormous burden for organizations and society as a whole. But with robust and effective processes in place, many accidents can be prevented. This is where the future ISO 45001 on occupational health and safety comes in. Designed to help all organizations of all sizes and industries put in place a safe working environment for their employees, the standard is expected to reduce workplace injuries and illness around the world. Given that this new management system will become a part of the business norm, regardless of whether the organization chooses to adopt it or not. Since the standard helps to set up a system vital for worker safety in the workplace, it’s important to stay abreast of the latest development.

The development of this new standard is timely because it coincides with the recently newly revised ISO9001 (quality management system) and ISO 14001(environmental management system) which use a common risk-based framework and easy to put into practice. The commonalities among the standards enable organizations to integrate them more easily into their business processes. The standard does not deal with products and how they should be used or maintained rather the focus is workplace safety and for this, it uses a technique of identifying the hazards at work to get rid of and minimize those that pose a significance. Furthermore, as it does not conflict with other documents and standards, it enhances the opportunity of integrating with overall business processes.
The standard also gives credibility which as a result helps others key interest that is, quality of products and service.
